Stop Hunger Now – Pass it on!

As a whole, we seem to always focus on the obesity problem in the United States.  But another real problem is the hunger in our country and around the world.  Food is plentiful in this country… if you have the means to obtain it.  Unfortunately, many children in this affluent country go to bed hungry.  Other countries around the world don’t even have the access to the food.  Each day, more than 25,000 people die abroad from hunger and hunger related causes.

Every year our fifth grade elementary class raises money for a worthwhile organization.  This year they raised money for Stop Hunger Now.  My kids and I went the other night to help make the meals.  It was such a great learning experience for the kids (and parents) that I felt I had to share.

Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world.  All you need to raise is 25 cents for each meal you package. Set a goal for the number of meals you will package.  35-40 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in 2 hours.  10,000 is the minimum amount for a mobile packaging event.

All the children that came to volunteer had a role to play in packaging the meals.  From scooping the dry goods, to weighing, boxing and loading the truck!  Even the youngest helped by moving the bags along the processing line.

Teaching our children at a young age, that there are people out there that need our help, is a wonderful way to encourage a life long gift of giving.
