Hip Hip Hooray! Healthier School Lunches are on the Way!

Michelle Obama and Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack announced the Standards For School Meals. A program to ensure that all school districts will be offering healthier meals. It’s the first major overhaul to school food service in over 15 years.

You may have seen this on the news…. the information has been provided to school districts and some of them are already working to plan and implement the new guidelines.  These new standards allow  “more time for schools to implement key changes, which will be largely phased in over a three-year period, starting in School Year 2012-2013.”

According to the Press Release:

The final standards make the same kinds of practical changes that many parents are already encouraging at home, including:

  • Ensuring students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week; • Substantially increasing offerings of whole grain-rich foods;
  • Offering only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties;
  • Limiting calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; and
  • Increasing the focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

Implementing healthier food in the schools will help to reinforce the very important message that kids should be making healthy choices most of the time.  The goal is that foods served in school should reflect the same food that is served at home.
