What is our goal as parents?

“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”

-Chinese Proverb

This is a very philosophical question – but I believe most parents would agree that an overwhelming goal for our kids is to give them the ‘tools’ they need to become mature, happy, self assured, competent adults.

When does this ‘education’ begin?  It starts at day one and as my parents say, ‘It never ends…’

I may gripe that my own parents are still telling me how to do things, but I will give them credit that with age does come wisdom!  (So they have a lot of wisdom!!)

One of our main goals as dietitians is to teach ‘moderation’.  It is okay to have ice cream or pizza – just not every meal or even every day.

The sooner our kids understand that, the sooner they will begin to balance their own eating decisions, and in turn make healthier food choices.

Removing food options or choices all together does not teach real life habits and the responsibility that comes with becoming an independent school aged child…. or an adult out in the real world.

That is our goal – right?!
